Heading to Baja's border areas and want a head's up on the waiting time to get back in the U.S.? For Tijuana border wait times call (619) 690-8999 and or the Otay Mesa border wait times call (619) 671-8999. For border updates on the web drop by the U.S. CUSTOMS BORDER WEB SITE!
Baja is one of the last holdouts of the inaccessible open frontier. It
has only been in the last 2 decades that Baja's accessibility has been improved
to the point where visitors can actually plan a 'normal' trip. Before the Baja Highway
was completed, most of Baja could only be reached by small airplanes or
sturdy high clearance vehicles. Both of these modes of transportation demanded
a high degree of patience, as Baja's roads and runways were always in a
state of change.
Want to see Tijuana and the border areas of Baja in style? HOLLYWOOD LIMOUSINE offers the ultimate way to cruise Baja!
The Transpeninsular Highway opened up Baja to anyone with a decent car,
and Baja's International Airports now allow visitors to enjoy the wonders
of Baja for an extended weekend! Of course much of Baja is still very inaccessible
to all but the most determined explorer, which ads to the mystery and flavor
of this grand forgotten peninsula.
For Baja travelers driving the Peninsula, the Mexican government's GREEN ANGELS still patrol Baja's paved highways looking to help tourists with car problems. Give 'em a wave!
Looking for detailed information on how to CROSS THE BORDER? Look no further...Carlos has done the homework for you! For plenty of border crossing information, check out TRANSPORTATION in our TIJUANA directory!
For more information on BAJA TRANSPORTATION, check out this web page by award winning author and Baja resident Paula Mc Donald!
If you are really ready to rumble in the Baja you might want to consider the BAJA GPS GUIDE. You might get lost, but at least you will know where you are!
In his book "SeinLanguage", Jerry Seinfeld wrote: "I love to travel. Much more than I've ever enjoyed getting anywhere. Planes, boats, cars, trains, feet, whatever. I just want to move! I think destinations were invented so we all wouldn't look like we were just wandering around..." Yes Jerry, we agree, traveling is fun! Fortunately, in Baja, so is arriving (in Baja)!

AIR SERVICES
There are 4 destinations in Baja that are accessible via commercial flights.
Tijuana, Loreto, La Paz, and Los Cabos all have international airports.
Most tourists utilize Loreto Airport for mid-peninsula excursions, and Los
Cabos Airport for travel to the south of Baja. Tijuana and La Paz both receive
some degree of tourist traffic, however these two airports are also largely used
by the local people for business and personal travel.
GENERAL AVIATION

CHECKPOINTS
Driving in Baja? You'll probably have a great time! Especially if you are prepared to run into an occasional checkpoint as you travel Baja's main highways. These roadside checkpoints are organized by the Mexican government, with the goal of stemming the tide of illegal drugs and guns in Baja.
Each checkpoint is manned by a crew of armed Mexican soldiers (yes there really are bullets in those guns), which can seem a bit intimidating if you come upon them without knowing their purpose. Most of the men at these checkpoints are quiet young, and will not cause you any problems if you are free of drugs and guns.

FERRIES
Baja does have two direct water connections to mainland Mexico, via the ferries from LA PAZ and Santa Rosalia in Baja California Sur. The ferries in Santa Rosalia offer regular scheduled service to Guaymas every Friday departing at 11:00 P.M. (starting at $14.00 U.S.), while the ferries in La Paz offer regular service to Topolobampo and Mazatlan every day except Saturday (also starting at $14.00 U.S.).
Ferries carry vehicles as well as passengers, and are a great way to ad extra adventure to any Baja excursion!

GASOLINE
The availability of gasoline is Baja has improved considerably over the
last few years. There are many more PEMEX stations along Highway One, and
there are even a few stations in some of the smaller communities off of
the blacktop.
One stretch of the Baja Highway does exist that can pose a problem to
Baja travelers heading up or down the Peninsula. Heading south, the town
of El Rosario is often the last chance for gas for a long distance. Both
the PEMEX station and the La Pinta Hotel pumps in Catavina were very
unreliable during 2001, and there's no reason to think
that they will improve as we proceed through this year.
Beyond Catavina, the PEMEX station
at the Bahia de Los Angeles junction has been closed for quite some time,
so the next possible source on the highway is quite a bit further south
in Jesus Maria. If that station happens to be closed or out of gasoline,
Guerrero Negro is the next gas. This stretch of questionable fuel is a couple
of hundred miles long, and not a fun place to get stuck.
In a pinch, don't be afraid to ask around for gas. In Catavina there
is sometimes a family who lives behind the PEMEX station who sells gasoline
from large drums. At the Bahia de los Angeles junction, a local sometimes
sells gasoline on the east side of the highway, across from the closed PEMEX.
Both of these possible sources of gasoline are NOT reliable. Filling up
in the San Quintin / El Rosario area is important when traveling south,
and filling up in Guerrero Negro is important when heading north.
Gas prices tend to be a bit more expensive than gasoline prices in the
United States and Canada, except from the folks who sell it out of their
private supply. Their rates can easily be $3.00 U.S. per gallon. And if
you need it, it's worth every penny!

INSURANCE
Driving a car into Baja can be a spectacular adventure! And being properly
insured can ease the stress of driving in a foreign land. The minimum required
liability insurance in Baja is not expensive, but adding full collision
coverage to the policy can increase the price considerably. There are several
drive-through insurance companies just north of the border at each of the
border crossings, including Tijuana, Tecate, and Mexicali. Most of the different
companies at these offices offer similar rates. For a more aggressive rate,
and for annual policies, it might be worth the time to shop around and utilize
the services of the smaller insurance companies that don't have to support
the large overhead of the border offices.

MAPS
One of the great things about Baja is it's simplicity. Driving the Peninsula
from top to bottom involves taking only one road, Baja Highway One. Various
paved side excursions are available to destinations such as Tecate, San
Felipe and Todos Santos, and countless unpaved spur roads entice the Baja
traveler headed south.
There probably isn't a better map to bring along on a Baja road trip
than the Auto Club Baja map, although caution must be urged not to take
any map too seriously in Baja. Some roads die from lack of use, others are
created to accommodate new flows in local traffic. When in doubt, stop and
ask a local. They're usually happy to help whatever knowledge they may have
about current road conditions and directions. But be careful, sometimes
even the locals don't have a clue!

RECREATIONAL VEHICLES
Baja is a great RV destination! Baja is very RV friendly, and there are many places where you can pull up your rig right onto the beach. "Honey...I'm h-o-m-e!"
Probably the biggest concern with taking an RV to Baja is the width of the Baja highways. Although most of the major roads are paved and usually in pretty good condition, they are not wide, and road shoulders are not common. Still, with proper planning and a slow pace, the wide open spaces of Baja are spectacular!
Two good web sites to review for RVer's who want to tour the Baja Peninsula in an escorted RV caravan include BAJA WINTERS and BAJA AND BACK RV TOURS.
BAJA SI is a web site dedicated to R.V.ers headed for Baja, and offers good information on safety issues when traveling in Baja.
For good general information on RVs. the RECREATIONAL VEHICLE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION has a very good web site. GO R.V.ing also has some good information in the web!
MEXICO, MAGIC & RV'S is a unique half hour video that shows you how to prepare for and enjoy RVing in Baja! To order call Hope Shaw at (858) 488-0984. The package also includes a handy pocket guide!
