This east coast of Baja rarely gets cold. From December through March it can cool off in the evenings, but days are warm or hot the rest of the year.

A trip to a Baja Sea of Cortez hotel usually involves a trip deep into the outback of Baja. While there are a few hotels in San Felipe that are within a 3 hour drive of the US / Mexico border, most of the hotels along the east side of Baja are well into Baja's wilderness and far from any large population centers.

The hotels along Baja's Sea of Cortez run from the funky (El Pescador Hotel in the heart of San Felipe) to the devine (Posada de los Flores in the heart of Loreto). SAN FELIPE HOTELS

For a town so famous for tourists, San Felipe is a bit short on high quality accommodations. This is partially because most people visiting this part of Baja are not looking for anything too fancy. Where the Cabo crowd demands rooms with color TV, Internet access and telephones in each room, most of the Felipe crowd seems content just to have running water and a pillow. Still, for those who must have a some luxury, San Felipe does offer a few nice hotels.

  The rear patio of this sleepy motel faces all the action in San Felipe! The fact that the hotel adjoins the wonderful Baja Mar Seafood Restaurant is the icing on the cake! Economy rates. Carlos Fiesta loves this little motel!
  Room number 5 is the largest, has 3 beds, an ocean view and a small kitchenette area for about $65.

  GONZAGA BAY HOTELS

  Alfonsina's has been hosting the Baja wild and weary since 1961, and is the only civilized game in town, if you are looking for a decent roof over your head. Newer rooms with beds offer nice accommodations right on the beach.

  The six rooms just north of the restaurant were completed in 1996, and are actually pretty nice. Each one features a private bathroom. Three of these face the ocean, the other three face the airstrip and the inner bay.

  Ten newer rooms on the south end of the restaurant were completed in 1998. The five downstairs rooms are huge, and the five upstairs rooms offer big balconies with beautiful views of the ocean, back bay, and mountains. What these rooms lack in amenities, nature more than makes up for in spectacular views!

    Joaquin Cardenas (Alfonsina's son) and his bride Susana (and their son Joaquin Junior!) have taken over for Alphonsina at the resort, and provide excellent service for guests and travelers who stop by. Good people!
    The best way to be sure a room is available when you arrive is to fax or write Joaquin or Alfonsina 30 days in advance. The fax number is 011-52 (66) 26-1645. Rooms run $45 and sleep 4 people in two big beds. Discounted rates for one person in a room.

     

    PUNTA BUFEO MOTEL

    Located north of Gonzaga Bay 3 miles in Punta Bufeo.
    8 minimal rooms with cement floors and wood walls.
    Tom Bodet would probably not want to sleep here, but it will do in a pinch.
    Inexpensive!

   

  MULEGE AREA HOTELS

  Mulege offers several hotels in the 'quaint' category, and not much above that. The mega-resorts found in Rosarito Beach and Cabo San Lucas have yet to claim a stake in this sleepy oasis town, and everyone seems just fine with that.

    Don Johnson has a jewel here and a true Baja landmark.
    If you are a pilot and can't land on this airstrip you don't belong in Baja. Well maintained.
    Carlos Fiesta spent a morning talking with Don Johnson in his office recently. Don is very proud of the resort he created from scratch and takes pride in keeping things ship-shape. He's a great guy who has helped out many a Gringo in need.
    The hotel and Don are two true Baja legends!

    Mike George turned the keys over to ex-wife Olivia, and then she turned them over (unfortunately) to a new group. No feedback as to how the new management is running things, but Olivia still has the best Cheeseburgers in Paradise at the restaurant next door.
    The hotel rates vary for one person in a room, two people with one bed, 2 people with two beds, 2 people in a suite, and 4 people in a suite.

    A good hotel in a great location in the middle of town, just steps from the town square.
    This hotel has changed hands several times in the last 10 years and is now back on track again. The small pool is a real treat on those hot Mulege summer days ... as is the well stocked bar! Not expensive.

  There is definitely a shortage of hotels in the Bahia Concepcion area. Because the terrain is set up so well for camping and RVs hotels never really had a chance to gain a foothold in the area.

  Want to rent an awesome house on the beach? Stop by the restaurant on the beach at Playa Buenaventura and ask for Olivia or Mark. This cool rental house is the perfect place to spend a day or a week or a month! Great rates!!!

  Good hotels can be found 20 minutes north in Mulege, and one excellent hotel can be found on Playa Buenaventura.

  The hotel situation in Loreto seems to be improving each year. There are a few medium sized hotels in town, and a few new larger hotels. Fear not, the ever present Desert Inn Hotel chain also has their foot in the sand in Loreto, and a spectacular 5 star 128 room Camino Real resort is open south of town in Nopolo.
