ENSENADA is not as much a tourist town as it is a genuine Mexican city, yet it does have plenty to offer the visitor (400,000 visitors each year). The 74 mile drive south of the U.S. border is on an excellent 4 lane highway and can be traveled in just over an hour (or you can take 2 days and really have some fun!).

It has been said that Ensenada is a town built around a bar. Although this is a bit of an exaggeration, members of the Hussong's family have indeed been major players in the development of this port town since they opened Hussong's Cantina here back in 1892. Today, over a century later, its hard to beat the $3.00 margaritas, live mariachis and colorful clientele that help make this fine drinking establishment one of the most famous bars in the world! (Yes...the margarita was invented here!)

Ensenada's main shopping, eating and hotel street for tourists has gotten a nice facelift. Located in the northwest corner of town, just a block from the harbor, Avenida Lopez Mateos is a great place to walk, shop, eat and drink. Attractive brick-stamped sidewalks and crosswalks, combined with nice street lamps and other cosmetic improvements make this street the main showcase for Ensenada tourism. Enjoying breakfast or lunch at a colorful sidewalk cafe is a great way to take in the best that Ensenada has to offer.

A nice road drops into town from the north, complete with zillions of palm trees, once again showing that Ensenada is very aware of it's role as a growing tourist destination. Ensenada offers all of the services you would expect to find in any large city, including supermarkets, hospitals, miles of shopping and much more. Baja travelers headed further south into the Baja Peninsula utilize Ensenada as the last big stop to load up on essentials that start to become scarce as one heads south into Baja's wide open spaces. While in town, enjoy your hotel with that satellite TV. This might be your last chance to watch Seinfeld re-runs for a while (not that there is anything wrong with that).

Ensenada is a big port town, handling everything from fishing boats to cruise ships. A first class yacht harbor just north of town caters to pleasure craft and the facilities include one of Ensenada's best hotels.

Ensenada's close proximity to the U.S. border, coupled with its diverse attractions and special cultural flavor, promise to keep Ensenada near the top of the list of Baja destinations for adventurers looking for a quick across-the-border getaway!

Things get busy in Ensenada when the cruise ships hit town, usually Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. But these folks head back to the ship at night, so the crowds thin out at most of the restaurants and clubs at night. Other busy times in town are late February (Carnival), April (Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race) and November (Baja 1000 Off Road Race).

In the hills just outside of Ensenada there are several good wineries. For more information on one of the bigger companies visit the web site of CETTO WINES.

To see a photo of the S.S. Catalina when it sat in Ensenada harbor as seen by Carlos Fiesta on his 2,200 mile solo Baja adventure drop by CARLOS FIESTA'S 2,200 mile solo BAJA CIRCUMNAVIGATION.

THE GRINGO FACTOR

Remember: Ensenada is a pretty big place these days and the vast majority of the city is not set up for tourists. Most of the gringos in town end up near the northwest part of town, either near the harbor area or along nearby Avenida Lopez Mateos, the main shopping and dining street. Walking between these two main parts of town is easy, safe and enjoyable, and visitors are met with welcome smiles almost everywhere in this area. Most of the gringos that live in the general Ensenada area have homes south of town near Estero Beach, or further south along the coast near Punta Banda.

YOUR FIRST STOP IN TOWN

Ensenada is a big town and it may seem almost too big to figure out for the first time visitor. No worries, mate! To get your Ensenada vacation started just head for the intersection of Avenida Lopez Mateos and Avenida Ruiz (one block up from the harbor at the north end of town), and then park your car. This intersection is quickly becoming a center of activity for tourists, offering a variety of food (Papa's and Beer Cafe, Sushi and Charro Chicken), shopping (upper end and bargain basement) and world famous bars (Hussong's Cantina and Papas and Beer). For a relaxing 'get aquatinted' walk head south on Avenida Lopez Mateos and enjoy all of the flavor of this fun Baja town.

THE BEST OF ENSENADA

Ensenada visitors looking for the top end in lodging usually head for the LAS ROSAS HOTEL AND SPA on the coast about 10 minutes north of town. First class service with a beautiful infinity pool. Campers and RV's looking for a great place to hang their hat with a spectacular ocean view can head for the open spaces of the PLAYA SALDAMANDO campground 20 minutes north of town on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The best restaurant for exquisite food with a spectacular view is the PUNTA MORRO RESORT RESTAURANT, just 10 minutes north of town right on the bluffs (start with your outer fork and work your way in toward the plate). And the best place in town to hoist a margarita, people watch and listen to live mariachis is the world famous HUSSONG'S CANTINA on Avenida Ruiz in the heart of Ensenada. Bet you can't drink just one! For those looking for a place to dance and party hard head across the street from Hussong's Cantina to PAPAS AND BEER. Bring bail money. The best road trip from Ensenada is the 30 minute road south of town to La Bufadora at the end of the Punta Banda Peninsula. The shopping along the walk to the Blow Hole is the icing on the cake! Boaters who drop the hook in Ensenada will appreciate the professional services of BAJA NAVAL on the east end of the harbor. Complete with NOAA weather updates! And surfers looking for the best waves in Ensenada don't need to look any further than TODOS SANTOS ISLAND, 8 miles offshore. Don't like boats? San Miguel, 10 minuted north of town, offers good rights and camping off a boulder beach.

CARLOS FIESTA'S HOT TIP:No trip to Ensenada would be complete without a walking tour of the fish market and harbor side walk / malecon. Located near the entrance to town in the north east corner of the harbor, across the street from the Pemex station and the Baja Inn Hotel, this daily display of fresh fish from the fishing cooperatives all around Baja is quite a show. After a relaxing stroll around the new harbor walk, the h-u-g-e flagpole, and a stop to enjoy a fresh fish taco at one of the many streetside vendors near the entrance to the fish market is a perfect way to taste the flavor of Baja.

Ensenada offers miles of nice beaches, but because of the large harbor they are south of town. Heading south on the main road most roads heading west from the highway will get you to the sand.

At one time the entire coastal area west of downtown Ensenada was all sandy beaches. But building the harbor was necessary for the future growth of commerce in the area, so beaches took a back seat to the marina.

Today, even though nice beaches start less than a 10 minutes south of downtown Ensenada, most visitors spend there time here shopping, eating and sightseeing. Visitors looking for beach action will find a lot more going on in Estero Beach, 20 minutes south of Ensenada, or in ROSARTIO BEACH, about 35 minutes up the coast.

  • PLAYA SAN MIGUEL

Approximately 5 miles north of Ensenada, prior to the toll gate.
Dirt and rock beach. Good waves for surfing & boogie boards!
    Camping for a fee.

  • PLAYA HERMOSA (Corona Beach)

Miles of white sandy beaches from the marina south, all the way to Playa Estero!

  • PLAYA ESTERO

Approximately 5 miles south of town, right turn at Estero Beach signal.
Large estuary with calm water, perfect for all water sports.
The Estero Beach Hotel is the perfect access point!

  • PUNTA BANDA PENINSULA

Head south of town, right turn at La Bufadora sign.
Very clear water makes this area a good place for snorkeling or scuba diving.
Don't miss the blowhole and free churro samples at La Bufadora!

There are probably more camping and RV areas near Ensenada than any other area on the west coast of Baja! Close proximity to the U.S. border makes this a fun and easy destination.

Offshore fishing can be arranged at several locations in Ensenada. If you are staying in a hotel, your first inquiry might be the front desk. If they cannot recommend a skipper or a charter operation, try the shops on Ensenada's two main streets.

Another way to arrange for fishing in Ensenada is to head down to the harbor. Once you hit the big Fish Market, turn left at the harbor walk. There are several fishing operations right there on the boardwalk!

Anglers who want to fish in the waters off of Ensenada also have the option of booking with one of the many professional fishing companies out of San Diego. These folks know the local waters well, and most trips are successful with tight lines and good times.

Ensenada offers every type of hotel and lodging Baja travelers will need. The larger hotels cater to English speaking Baja travelers, as do some of the smaller operations.

Like most big towns, securing your vehicle during an overnight stay is a good idea. Petty auto theft is not uncommon in Ensenada. If you have any valuables in your car, it's best to take them with you into the hotel room at night.

When considering a location for your stay in Ensenada, think about where you are planning to spend most of your time. If the main thrust of your trip is to eat, drink and shop, you might want to consider a hotel downtown, near all of the tourist action, located on AVENIDA LOPEZ MATEOS. If, on the other hand, the main purpose of your trip is to go fishing, you might want to consider the convenience of a hotel near the harbor, or just north of town at the Marina!

Coyote Cal's Youth Hostel is located 45 minutes south of Ensenada just off the main highway at km. 78 for those looking for a cheap place to stay near the beach.

 BAJA EXPO

There's enough going on in the downtown Ensenada area to keep a visitor busy for days. But if you are looking for an excuse to head a bit out of town, there are a few key places you might want to visit.

  • LA BUFADORA

La Bufadora is a natural wonder that attracts tens thousands of people each year! Located 23 miles southwest of Ensenada at PUNTA BANDA, this amazing natural 'blowhole' spews ocean water and foam high into the air with each incoming swell from the Pacific Ocean.

Observation decks, restrooms and lighting add to the appeal of this interesting natural phenomena. The hundreds of curious shops that line the street to the viewing area are totally fun! Snorkeling in the calm bay adjacent to the blowhole is very good!

  • WINERIES

There is more going on in Mexico than just Tequila! Sharing a similar climate to southern California which offers some excellent wines, the hills surrounding Ensenada in northern Baja also provide a climate conducive for growing grapes. An increasing number of Ensenada area wineries are gaining notoriety in the world of good wines.

Many of these wineries offer tours, and this is a great way to spend a day outside of Ensenada. Returning in time for dinner in one of Ensenada's great restaurants is a good way to complete the day!

Each summer various festivals are held at many of these wineries. These "festivals" are like large parties and include food, wine, music & dancing! Purchasing tickets in advance is usually a good idea as these events can get very crowded. Carlos Fiesta spend a week at one of these winery festivals one day!

     BAJA EXPO

Even though Ensenada is a working town, there are many recreational opportunities in the area for Baja travelers.

Because of Ensenada's close proximity to the U.S. border, some Baja fans head down for just a 2 or 3 day weekend for some form of recreation. No, drinking at Hussong's Cantina is not considered recreation!

Two good COMPANIES to review for RVer's who want to tour the Baja Peninsula in an escorted RV caravan include BAJA WINTERS and BAJA AND BACK RV TOURS.

    BIKES * BOATING * DIVING * GOLFING * KAYAKING* OFF ROADING * SAILING * SURFING * TENNIS* VOLLEYBALL * WHALE WATCHING * WATERSPORTS *

    BIKES

The most famous bike ride on Earth! The ROSARITO - ENSENADA 50 MILE BIKE RIDE is one of the biggest annual events in all of Baja! This super-fun bike run starts in Rosarito Beach, snakes along the Pacific Ocean on the "free road", then at Km. 60 heads inland and up a killer hill "El Tigre" before leveling off in the wide open spaces of the Baja interior.

The course remains relatively flat along the top of the plateau, before a long and winding downhill spills the bikes and riders into Ensenada for a world-class celebration! This ride is nothing but fun! (after you reach the top of that killer hill!)

    BOATING

The main Ensenada Marina is located right at the entrance to town. Service and fuel are available, and this is a great place to provision before heading further south.

Also, there is a nice yacht harbor just a few miles north of town, Coral Marina, and an excellent hotel on site.

The next good harbor with provisions south of the Ensenada area is over 400 miles south at Bahia Tortugas, although boaters can drop the hook in SAN QUINTIN for fuel, a hotel and a restaurant. There is also a natural harbor a bit south in Santa Rosalillita, but marine services there are very limited.

BAJA NAVAL is at your service in Ensenada for your marine needs.

For a good book detailing the waters off of Baja and Ensenada you can't beat MEXICO BOATING GUIDE by John and Pat Rains.

Ensenada harbor was the first stop for Carlos Fiesta's 2,200 mile BAJA CIRCUMNAVIGATION. Check it out!

DIVING

The protected waters south of Ensenada, from Punta Banda to La Bufadora, are very good for diving and snorkeling.

Diving is also good off of Todos Santos island, in the middle of the bay. Visibility is usually 30 feet or better, and can reach 50 feet and more during the calm seas of summer.

The ocean water temperature never really gets warm in the Ensenada area, the high 60's is about as warm as it gets, and that is usually only for a month or two at the end of summer. Wetsuits are necessary all year.

  • PUNTA BANDA.

Head south of town 12 miles, right at Punta Banda signal, then drive to the end.

For current information check the SCORE-INTERNATIONAL web site.

SAILING AND YACHTING

Because it is the closest harbor city south of the U.S. border, Ensenada has always had its fair share of sailing and yachting activity. The annual Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race is a good example of the kind of fun to be had just a short distance from the border!

There are two harbors in town. The main harbor offers all marine services, in a less intimate setting. The yacht harbor several miles north of town at Coral Marina is set up specifically for pleasure craft, and offers an excellent hotel and other services.

NIGHTLIFE!

Hussong's Cantina is not the only bar in town, but it should not be missed by anyone who loves a good time. As Ensenada's role as a tourist destination increases, more bars are opening up every year to meet the needs of entertainment-hungry gringos!

It is important to remember that being drunk and disorderly in Ensenada is no more accepted here than in any other city. Yes, they may be a tad more tolerant just because there are so many young people coming down to party, but very nice people end up in a very crummy jail very often because they got bombed and did something stupid. This is the wrong place to start a fight or drink and drive!

  • HUSSONG'S CANTINA

    Telephone 011-52 (646) 178-3210.
Avenida Ruiz 113, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
You've heard the stories, now live the adventure!
There is no other bar in the world like Hussongs! The crowd is usually a delicious mix of Mexicans, Americans, plus a collection of other interesting folks from all around the world.
Mariachi music often fills the air, competing with the mild roar of customers working on their third cocktail. On big weekends, when there is an event in town, Hussong's becomes a squeeze-as-you-please focal point to let the good times roll!
Hussong's was originally established as a stagecoach stop by its German founder Johan Hussong, and today it is a great stop for anyone looking for a brief getaway from the real world, into a part of history that will hopefully be around for a long time to come!
Don't fight the crowds on the main street for parking, plentiful parking in rear for a couple of dollars.
Carlos Fiesta will send you $10 if you can tell him where the Baja Expo decals are located (there are 3 visible in the Cantina)!
Yes the margarita was really invented here!
    Bring bail money.

The main streets of Avenida Lopez Mateos and Avenida Ruiz offer dozens of great shops. Park the car somewhere near where they intersect, and hoof it till you drop! For food and supplies, the large shopping center south of town is hard to beat.

All shops accept U.S. dollars, and many accept credit cards. As a general rule, the nicer the shopping establishment is, the less excited they are going to be about bargaining with you on prices. If you really like to bargain, head for the small shops at La Bufadora, south of town!

For a shopping "excursion" of shorts, hop in the car and head south for Bunta Banda / La Bufadora. There are dozens of curious shops lining the pathway to the blowhole, as well as a few places to grab a bite to eat!

Visit the web site of JOHN RAMOS to review his unique and colorful Mexico art work.

  • GIGANTE SUPERMARKET

South end of town, corner of Avenida Lopez Mateos and Calle Detante.

REAL ESTATE BROKERS

Ensenada real estate prices lag the coastal areas to the north of town. With the well designed 4 lane highway stretching from the border all the way to Ensenada, more Baja aficionados will gradually become interested in buying real estate in this fast growing seaport town as soon as the US real estate recession is over. There are many vacation homes north of town, however each year more and more folks choose the coastal areas south of town as the perfect location for their Baja hideaway.

The road south west of town heading towards Punta Banda has gotten a lot of attention over the last few years, and the settlement of Punta Banda itself continues to attract Baja lovers looking to get away from the big city. Checking to be sure the land is free of any title problems has become very important. Ensenada tends to mark the southern end of Baja's popular 'Gold Coast' tourist area, which begins just below the border and runs for over 70 miles to Punta Banda.

Thinking about moving south of the border? Visit the web site of BAJA RELOCATION for a head's up for what awaits you.

REAL ESTATE BROKERS

Ensenada does have quite a few real estate offices, but most of them cater to the local people. There are, however, several agents who do work with Gringos, and they seem to know the town very well. They tend to share most of their listings with each other in order to offer a greater variety of homes for potential buyers to choose from.

DEVELOPER PROPERTIES

Many new developments are in the planning stages or under construction in Ensenada despite the huge real estate recession. Communities with ocean view houses and condos are available with title insurance and finance. Ensenada has several real estate companies.

The Waterfront of Ensenada is undergoing a big change with new condo hotels and developments planned where the existing marinas are being expanded to accommodate larger boats and more tourist related businesses.

Playa Saldamando is a magnificent waterfront site located at the epicenter of Baja's Big Sur - an easy ninety minutes south of San Diego. 220 home sites and 200 villas surrounded by 100 acres of beautiful Baja landscape are planned. Good Luck.

Salsipuedes is located just north of Ensenada and will be the largest of all of the new developments in this area. Grupo Lagza, the most influential of the Baja developers will start developing here. There will be a Condo Hotel as well as oceanfront lots, homes, condos and villas to choose from. When completed, Salipuedes will be a retirement or vacation for over 2600 people. There will be cafes, shops and restaurants making this a true village linking many of the new developments. Don't hold your breath.

Chapultapec is located above the city with amazing harbor views. This area is the favorite of wealthy local Ensenada families. A secure gated community with large lots and magnificent homes, there are now new homes available. A condo development is planned for early next year is now selling at pre-constructions prices.

Some Americans are choosing Ensenada as a retirement destination and there will soon be several oceanfront condo developments as well as gated residential communities available that will offer oceanfront resort hotels, villas and houses.
