Todos Santos (GPS coordinates 23'36 N ~ 110'19 W) remained untouched by tourism for most of its history. Although it was occupied on and off by Indians for thousands of years, it was settled as an outpost mission site in the 1723 and as a full mission in 1733. The area was eventually abandoned by mid-century.
During the late 1800's and into the 1900's, Todos Santos was a farming town (mostly sugar cane with 8 sugar mills), taking full advantage of the fertile land of the Valle de Pilar, abundant spring water, and excellent weather.
In the 1980's the Mexican government decided to pave and complete the old Highway 19 connecting Todos to Cabo San Lucas to make the area easier to get to and to add a second (and faster) route from La Paz to the quickly developing area of Cabo San Lucas.
When the blacktop was completed Todos Santos was sitting smack dab in the middle of Cabo and La Paz, there for all the world to see. Once the new road gained popularity, the secret was out. Todos Santos, probably one of the quaintest towns on the west coast of Baja, soon became a favorite to many.
Today the streets of Todos Santos are home to over 10,000 inhabitants, and the number is growing each year. Artisits, surfers, retired folks and those who just like living in a beautiful beachside community keep coming to Todos Santos.
Fortunately the increased popularity of Todos Santos has done little to take away from it's charm. The clean streets are usually not too busy, and traffic jams are not a problem.
The town offers a couple of small hotels, including the infamous Hotel California. There are a several nice places to eat, and a couple of small stores. The number of galleries and artsy shops is on the increase, and walking
the streets is a relaxing and pleasant experience.
The town itself is a mile or two inland from the coast, but these are
several roads that lead to the beaches. These beaches never get crowded,
even when the waves are up and the surf crowd is in town. These gorgeous
beaches look a lot like southern California beaches used to look like, before
the crowds.
The beaches from Todos Santos to Cabo are some of Baja's most beautiful.
Remote and undeveloped, most of these beaches are accessible by short dirt
roads just off the main highway.
South of Todos beach access off of the Baja blacktop can be garnered at many locations, including KM 54 (Playa Punta Lobos), Km 57 (Playas las Palmas), Km 59 (San Pedrito), Km 64 (Playa los Cerritos), Km 66 (camping and RV beach), Km 68.5 (short dirt road), Km 78.5 (Restaurant Tamarindo and beach bungalows for rent), Km 83.5 (road to hill overlooking beach) and Km 96.5 (empty beach).
ATV' can sometimes be rented at Km 104.5 (Baja's ATV's) and at Km 106 (Rancho ATV Tours). If you want to have as much fun as possible with your clothes on make an appointment to rent a real Baja 1000 Buggie (road track located at Km 106.5) from the fun folks at WIDE OPEN BAJA. Carlos Fiesta did this and it was one of the most exciting things he's ever done in Baja!
Todos Santos has been compared to California's beautiful coastal city of Carmel. This quaint town is a magnet for artists and creative types, and wonderful galleries are popping up throughout town. Most are within walking distance to each other and they add a very special flavor to this unique Baja town.

THE GRINGO FACTOR
Todos Santos is evolving from a sleepy Baja town to a hip Gringo destination. This seaside village seems to have more in common with California's artsy city of Carmel each year, including art galleries, boutique cafes and other tastes of culture. Much of the gringo visitor activity is in the downtown area and along the beaches, while Norteamericanos who have moved into this little slice of paradise have homes in the hills south, west and north of town. Yes there are still plenty of Mexicans in Todos Santos, but their days may be numbered. Gringos looking for a faster pace slip an hour south on Highway 19 to CABO SAN LUCAS.
YOUR FIRST STOP IN TOWN
Looking for a place to start your walking tour Baja's quaintest town? Track down the Hotel California on the north end of town on the main street and park ol' Bessy right there! The bar at the hotel is always good for a cold glass of orange juice or a cervesa, a little music, and the tables on the sidewalk are the perfect place to watch the world go by. Thirsty? The Hotel California Tequila available in the gift shop will wet your whistle. The bookstore is just up the street, as are several galleries and eateries. Try to take a slower pace now that you are here ... this is the real Baja!
CARLOS FIESTA'S HOT TIP:If you like collecting shells,
or just want to walk along a picture-perfect beach and enjoy the solitude,
take one of the dirt roads south of town towards the beach. Viewing the crystal
clear horizon line where the ocean meets the sky is good for the soul.
Todos Santos has some of the most beautiful beaches in Baja! Because the paved Highway 19
heads south from here, the southern beaches are very accessible. The northern beaches are also accessible, but you must zig and zag north of town to find them.
However, if you are looking for adventure and beaches, a trek north of Todos Santos is just
the ticket.
Todos Santos beaches are on the Pacific Ocean and the waves can get big. The larger waves are more common in the winter, when tropical storms to the south generate hefty swells. However, Todos Santos is also exposed to swells from the north, so beach bums need to be aware of high surf conditions all year long.
San Pedrito and Playa los Cerritos are two beaches were the ocean floor drops off more gradually, providing a more freindly shoreline expereince. Playa Los Cerritos is one of Carlos Fiesta's favorite beaches in Baja.
The ocean water temperature runs from cool to downright hot, depending upon the time of year. The water temp usually peaks out in September, often getting into the high 80's and low 90's. From that point through winter, the water temperature will drop until April and May, when it finally bottoms out in the high 60's or low 70's.
The surf shop in town (next to Shup Up Frank's Restaurant on the main street) rents surfboards and sells wax.
Closer to Cabo there is a road to the Pacific ocean and the sand dunes at Km 119.5.

Fishing in the waters off of Todos Santos can be very productive. Most of the different types of fish that reside in southern Baja waters also call the waters off of Todos Santos home. These fish include marlin, yellowtail, dorado, roosterfish, swordfish, wahoo and many more. Todos Santos, however, is not really set up as a fishing town, as the facilities and services
an hour south in Cabo San Lucas are tough to compete with. However, fishing from pangas can be quite an adventure for those who are prepared for the launching and landings through the waves at Punta Lobos, south of town near Km. 54.
Fishing usually gets started between 6:30 to 6:45 in the morning, will last until lunch time, and will run you about $200 U.S.
For fishing in nearby Cabo San Lucas drop by our extensive CABO FISHING section.
And for fishing information in other parts of Baja check out our main BAJA FISHING section.

While sitting at the bar at Hotel California one morning drinking a fresh orange juice, listening to the Eagles "When Hell Freezes Over" C.D., the gentleman sitting next to Carlos Fiesta asked the bartender if this was the same "Hotel California" that the Eagles wrote about in their song. The barkeep smiled, nodded his head, and said, "Not only did they write that song about this hotel, but they actually owned the hotel from 1974 through 1995." Baja travel writer Joe Cummings was the first to break the story that the Eagles had absolutely no involvement in the hotel whatsoever, but rumors have still made it a popular attraction.
The hotel has recently been purchased by a group of Canadians, and has regained all of it's former glory, and then some.

The beaches up and down the coast from Todos Santos can be excellent for

For the more ambitious, a hike from town to the beach is a great adventure, yet not overly taxing for most folks. Plan on a couple of hours round-trip, which will allow you a bit of time to enjoy the beautiful coastline.
For those with a true hiking spirit, the canyons that cross the mountains south and east of town offer a very unique

Playa Los Cerritos, south of Pescadero at Km. 64 is a decent break offering good shape, although may not handle a large swell. Playa San Pedrito, south of town at Km. 59, hold a swell very well, with excellent shape.
There are numerous other good breaks north and south of town. Much of the coastline
is beach break, but there are several good point breaks.

MEXICO EXPO TRAVEL GUIDE
BAJA EXPO
Baja Highway 19 connect two of Baja's biggest cities and runs right through
Todos Santos. Buses come through town frequently, headed north to La Paz
and south to Cabo San Lucas (well under 2 hours either way).
There are a few blue taxis in
town, should you decide to get dropped off at a quiet beach! But a grand tour of town on foot can be completed in under an hour, so taxis are not really needed to get around.
There are currently
no rental cars in Todos, although a PEMEX station in town usually has gasoline
for those who bring their own vehicles.
Two good web sites to review for RVer's who want to tour the Baja Peninsula in an escorted RV caravan include BAJA WINTERS and BAJA AND BACK RV TOURS.
BUSES
The bus stop is near the Corner of Calle Colegio Militar and Calle Zaragoza, by the town park.
It's just under 2 hours to Cabo San Lucas to the south (buses depart approximately every hour in the morning, not as often in the afternoon), and it's about the same
driving time to La Paz to the north, with the same general frequency for departure times as the Cabo route.
GASOLINE STATION
The main PEMEX station is located on Highway 19, at the south end of town, west side of the street. The other option is the newer PEMEX further south (#7513) located at Km 62, which also offers a small market and bathrooms.
These folks will also change your oil, lube your car, and provide air and water for your vehicle. Open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight!
Tires can be repaired across the street at Llantera Agundez for a moderate fee.

MEXICO EXPO TRAVEL GUIDE
BAJA EXPO
Todos Santos real estate saw a significant increase until anout 2007.
But the market into 2009 has cooled. With weather this nice, and a town this quaint, it was
inevitable that real estate would become a desirable commodity here.
Prices are still affordable by most standards.
This 'Carmel' of Baja is bound to see even more real estate growth in the
years to come.
Thinking about moving south of the border? Visit the web site of BAJA RELOCATION for a head's up for what awaits you.
RANCHO CIELOMAR is an oceanfront villa for rent off the beaten path 20 miles south of Todos Santos.
